One of the difficulties Personhood Ohio and other state personhood movements have had in protecting every preborn child statewide is the reluctance of established pro-life and pro-family groups to help. It is not because those groups and their leaders don’t want to protect every preborn child statewide – they do! They just have a strategy that incorporates the justification of some child-killing, the further dehumanization of preborn children, the belief that judicial tyranny takes precedence over the U.S. Constitution and divine law, and the endorsement of political candidates similarly compromised.
Most of the pro-life legislation that has been hailed as life-saving blatantly violates God’s law by justifying abortions in cases of rape, incest, or the health of the mother. Personhood advocates realize if our hands are stained with innocent blood in our pro-life proposals, inasmuch as they permit the killing of some children, we lose the blessing of God even if we save lives. Most of the compromised proposals of late do not save lives, as they are frequently overturned by activist judges, but even if they did save lives, “shall we do evil that good may come?” God forbid! (Romans 3:8)
The Creator is the standard of morality and justice, and any alternative to His will is a counterfeit. Jesus said, “It is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish” (Matthew 18:14). Not one! Only justice abates the wrath of God against our nation for the shedding of innocent blood, and being unjust in our remedies is not a step in the right direction (Genesis 9:6; Numbers 35:30-34; Deuteronomy 21:1-9). Permitting the killing of some to save others is not the path to God’s blessing, but rather makes us accomplices in the Abortion Holocaust, hastening the judgment our nation has coming to it.
Moreover, the opponents of Personhood consistently dehumanize the preborn to accomplish their incremental strategy. Most of the pro-life legislation that has been hailed as successful perpetuates the dehumanization of preborn children, further alienating these babies from their God-given right to life. For example, the penalty for killing a preborn child whose physician documents a heartbeat, according to Ohio’s proposed Heartbeat Bill, is a fifth degree felony, which would force Ohio law to favor the life of a dog above the life of a preborn child. Some would argue that the Heartbeat Bill would save lives, even if it denies the personhood of those created in God’s image; Personhood advocates, however, realize that losing the blessing of God by being an accomplice in the dehumanization of the slaughtered preborn is too great a sacrifice for the sake of a hopeful, compromised bill with so many exceptions and loopholes. (Read a more thorough evaluation of Ohio’s Heartbeat Bill here: http://www.wnd.com/2011/09/346797/.)
Do the leaders and crafters of the Heartbeat Bill believe that all preborn children are created in God’s image? Of course! Why then do they dehumanize the preborn child in prescribing an unjust penalty for murder, for exempting accomplices, and for perpetuating the decriminalization of child-killing if the physician does not document a heartbeat? Because they want to obtain the permission of a godless court, and are willing to spurn the will of a heavenly court to get it.
Some pro-life groups such as Ohio Right to Life have even gone so far as to oppose Personhood amendments and abortion bans because they fear that, even if the Personhood Amendment or abortion ban passes, the judiciary may overturn it. They believe that we should only attempt what we think will clear the judicial hurdle. Implied in this objection is a belief in the supremacy of the judiciary, even over the will of the representatives and of the people, even over the U.S. Constitution, even over divine law. A Grand Opportunity for Courageous Leaders to Rise
With the pro-life movement adrift rudderless is a sea of pragmatism and optional principles, how refreshing it is to see godly leaders rise to the helm with God’s Word as their guide, God’s smile as their motivation, and their eyes fixed on the goal of protecting every preborn child.
Last year, when Georgia RTL leaders encouraged federal legislators to vote against the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, National Right to Life (NRTL) brazenly disaffiliated Georgia Right to Life. The compromised legislation included exceptions allowing abortion in the cases of rape, incest, or danger to the mother’s health, and further dehumanized the preborn child in federal law; thus, it merited the opposition of Christians who believe that the right to life is God-given and inalienable, and that no murder is justifiable.
NRTL also severed ties with the Cleveland chapter over its opposition to a NRTL-endorsed, pro-life senator who supported same-sex marriage. Cleveland RTL rightly reasoned that if a legislator was so far compromised that he was willing to turn his back on the time-honored tradition of marriage in favor of sexual perversion, how can he be trusted to keep his word on the life issue?
The Georgia and Cleveland RTL leaders did not take this challenge from national pro-life leadership as a shameful demotion, but an opportunity to rise up! Standing against NRTL’s compromise shows some major umph on the part of Georgia and Cleveland RTL leaders. It is rare courage indeed.
The past two years, Cleveland RTL featured nationally recognized Personhood speakers at their annual conference. Last year, they featured Rebecca Kiessling, who directs a ministry called Save the One. Conceived in rape, she has been a powerful voice for the elimination of exceptions in our pro-life legislation. In April of this year, Cleveland’s conference featured Georgia RTL president, Dan Becker. He received a standing ovation after his lecture on Personhood. We gathered many signatures and gave away many petitions at our booth at the conference.
Dan Becker’s book – Personhood: A Pragmatic Guide to Prolife Victory in the 21st Century and the Return to First Principles in Politics – landed on the desk of the president of Cleveland RTL, Molly Smith, and when she read it, she became convinced that the Personhood strategy is what will end abortion in America. She abandoned the compromised strategy that has characterized the pro-life movement that last four decades. Soon thereafter, she informed me that she was committed to help Personhood Ohio with our ballot initiative. I met with her last week, and she heroically spurned the judicial supremacy presupposition that has caused so many genuinely pro-life leaders to oppose Personhood Amendments and abortion bans. She has taken a position as director of the National Personhood Alliance (NPA), a confederation of faith-based, pro-life organizations and leaders who believe Personhood is essential to protecting all human beings. The NPA will provide a no-exceptions, principled alternative to compromised National Right to Life that is desperately needed on Capitol Hill and in our statehouses.
So not only is one of the largest Right to Life groups in Ohio committed to help with the Ohio Personhood Amendment, the Cleveland RTL President, Molly Smith, has taken a national leadership position in a national Personhood organization!
Visit the website of the National Personhood Alliance – www.personhood.net – and become familiar with their mission. Their mission is critical to protecting every preborn child by love and by law. Pray for Molly Smith and the NPA. Pray that North Dakota’s Human Life Amendment passes in the ballot box this November. Pray for Personhood Ohio, that we will get the signatures we need to get this on the ballot, and that once the Ohio Personhood Amendment passes, we will have courageous state leaders who will do their duty and protect the preborn within their lawful jurisdiction, even defying any unlawful judicial attempt to impede the enforcement of this life-saving law.
